HSS 101: An Introduction to HSS
Description:
This session will provide an overview of the HSS market as well as introduce STI members and the breadth of member production capabilities. With availability being such an important aspect of each structural project, the session will also discuss how rolling schedules are created, which sizes run with each other on both round-to-shape and direct form mills, and why mills have minimums. Some of the most meaningful HSS benefits will be discussed in the session and Steel Tube Institute tools will be introduced.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify Steel Tube Institute members and wide-ranging overall size range.
- Learn how mill rolling schedules are created and how this applies to size availability.
- Evaluate HSS benefits in structural applications.
- Introduce STI tools such as the Capability Tool and HSS vs. WF load calculator.

Nate Carruthers, Director of Marketing, Bull Moose Tube Company
About Nate:
Nate Carruthers is currently the Director of Marketing at Bull Moose Tube. He has over 20 years of steel industry experience spanning steel pipe & tube manufacturing, distribution, and equity research. Prior to Bull Moose, Nate spent five years at Tubular Steel Inc., a steel pipe & tube distributor where he led the company’s business development initiatives and he began his career as an equity research analyst at Steel Market Intelligence, where he developed a deep expertise of the global steel industry. He currently serves as Task Committee Chair for Fabrication and Service Centers at the Steel Tube Institute (STI).
Nate holds a B.B.A. in Finance from The University of Iowa.
