Description
2026 Mastering HSS Connections Series
Ninth installment of the 2026 HSS Mastering HSS Connections series (see below for more details).
Level: Intermediate, Technical, Engineer, Fabricator
This presentation explores the transformative role of steel castings in Hollow Structural Section (HSS) structures, focusing on the geometric freedom of casting design to improve structural performance, enhance architectural freedom, and innovate constructability methods. Attendees will learn how precision-engineered cast steel components can integrate with HSS structures to simplify complex connections, improve fabrication, and explore new possibilities in architectural and structural solutions.
By exploring real-world case studies, this course introduces creative approaches using steel castings that pioneer HSS constructability unmatched by conventional methods. Project examples will also consider the tolerance and performance benefits of using castings in complex connection geometries and demanding structural designs. This presentation provides valuable strategies for engineers, architects, fabricators and contractors to innovate HSS structures with steel castings to achieve efficiency, performance and innovation.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the structural and architectural advantages of steel castings in HSS systems.
- Identify key applications where steel castings simplify fabrication, improve constructability, and enhance performance in HSS structures.
- Review case studies which demonstrate successful implementation in real-world HSS projects.
- Recognize opportunities for steel casting use in critical structures and connections.
