HSS Design 202: Practical Connection Design and Specification Updates
Description:
Behind every great HSS design is a smart connection – and often, a few clever approaches to make it work efficiently in the shop and the field. This session will demystify HSS connection design by removing layers behind HSS limit states to consider and showing how strategic detailing can simplify fabrication without sacrificing structural performance. We will draw from fabricator feedback and spot common pitfalls before they become costly problems. We will also touch on the latest specification updates so you can keep your designs efficient, code-compliant, and fabrication friendly.
Learning Objectives:
- Approach HSS connection design by understanding applicable limit states.
- Highlight practical considerations for HSS connections, including bolting and welding tips unique to HSS.
- Gain insight on cost-effective HSS detailing and design based on feedback from fabricators.
- Touch on AISC 360-22 Specification and Manual updates, from directional weld factors to shear lag.
