Title: HSS Moment Connections: The Good, The Better, and The Ugly
Date: Wednesday, August 26, 2026
Time: 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. CT
Format: Live Webinar
Level: Advanced, Technical, Engineer, Fabricator
Combining HSS columns with WF beams utilizes the most efficient aspects of each shape for a cost-effective moment connection. There are a wide variety of ways to transfer moment, and the one you choose will have an impact on the ease of construction and overall strength. This presentation will provide design examples of three different WF beam to HSS column moment connections so that the designer is equipped to choose the most appropriate one.
Learning Objectives
- Explore relative costs and details of a variety of moment connections.
- Verify which limit states apply to moment connections at HSS columns.
- Determine when more robust moment connections are necessary.
- Work through three examples: a continuous beam over HSS column; a flange-plated moment connection; and a through-plated moment connection.
