First installment of the HSS Mastering HSS Connections series (see below for more details)
AIA Approved CE Webinars On Demand | Mastering HSS Connections: Understanding HSS Limit States (April 2025)
Level: Intermediate, Technical, Engineer/Fabricator

The Steel Tube Institute kicks off its new HSS series, “Mastering HSS Connections,” with an in-depth explanation of the unique mechanics of HSS limit states. This webinar will break down the intricacies of HSS connections and explore the principles behind the code equations. With these insights in mind, engineers and fabricators alike will confidently handle unique HSS connection scenarios and streamline the design process. (1.0 PDH or 1.0 LU/HSW)

  • Compare fundamental differences between wide flange and HSS failure behaviors
  • Investigate how yield-line theory produces plastification check equations
  • Identify the limit states of local yielding, buckling, and crippling
  • Verify by example how HSS walls can resist shear rupture / punching

SpeakerBeth Suminski
Beth has worked for 25 years as a structural engineer in the fields of consulting engineering, software, and continuing education. During her first few years, her experiences in construction defect litigation cemented her understanding of how and how NOT to design a structure. She spent the following years as a practicing consulting engineer in San Diego, and later as a director of structural software sales and development with Bentley. In her current position with FORSE, she continues to pursue both the design and educational aspects of structural engineering. One topic Beth highlights is structural steel HSS design, as a technical consultant to the Steel Tube Institute. Beth is a licensed PE and SE in California and a licensed PE in Arkansas.
