Description

AIA Approved CE Webinar On Demand: HSS – How to Splice Your Slice or Plate It (April 2024)Level: Intermediate, Technical, Fabricators

All good things must come to an end, including where any HSS sections used in your structure terminate. At that point, your HSS member often requires a splice to keep the good times going or a plate to close things off. This session will address considerations specific to HSS base plate, end plate, cap plate, and splice connections, such as:

  • Welding at HSS corners vs flats
  • When to apply weld increases or reductions
  • Optimal bolt layout
  • HSS factors including closed sections, weld seams, and matched cross-sections

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key considerations in HSS spliced and plated connections.
  • Assess which HSS limit state checks apply to various spliced and plated connections.
  • Evaluate weld applicability at HSS spliced and plated connections.
  • Equip engineers with practical design examples of HSS spliced and plated connections.

SpeakerBeth Suminski 450w Webinar On Demand: HSS – How to Splice Your Slice or Plate It (April 2024)
Beth has worked for 25 years as a structural engineer in the fields of consulting engineering, software, and continuing education. During her first few years, her experiences in construction defect litigation cemented her understanding of how and how NOT to design a structure. She spent the following years as a practicing consulting engineer in San Diego, and later as a director of structural software sales and development with Bentley. In her current position with FORSE, she continues to pursue both the design and educational aspects of structural engineering. One topic Beth highlights is structural steel HSS design, as a technical consultant to the Steel Tube Institute. Beth is a licensed PE and SE in California and a licensed PE in Arkansas.
