HSS Market Availability — Reference Guide

This tool summarizes regular-schedule and on-demand production capability for hollow structural sections (HSS) reported by the nine STI member producers — Atlas Tube, Bull Moose Tube, H.W. Metals, Maruichi American (MAC), Maruichi Leavitt, Maruichi Oregon (MOST), Nucor Tubular, Searing Industries, and Vest — across 20+ facilities, together accounting for roughly 80% of domestic HSS production.

ASTM material specifications

Tip: the heatmap above shows the specification you've selected. Use the HSS material specification picker at the top of the page to switch between A500, A1085, and A1065 and see how the producible size range changes for each.
Specification Description Min. yield Fy Wall Size range Availability
ASTM A500 Cold-formed carbon steel structural tubing — typically roll-formed from coil and joined by electric-resistance welding (ERW); seamless is also permitted by the spec. The most widely-specified HSS standard for general structural use. Grade C is the recommended default. 50 ksi (Gr. C) Up to 1″ Max perimeter 88″ Produced Regularly
ASTM A1085 Cold-formed welded carbon steel HSS, manufactured like A500 but with tighter wall thickness and corner radii tolerances plus an added minimum mass tolerance. The tighter wall thickness tolerance lets designers use the full nominal wall thickness (no 0.93 reduction). Includes a Charpy V-notch (CVN) requirement. 50 ksi 0.148–1″ Similar to A500; max perimeter 88″ Produced on Demand
ASTM A1065 Cold-formed HSS that extends beyond A500's size range for square and rectangular sections. Each tube is press-brake-formed from two C-shape plate halves and joined by submerged-arc welds (SAW) along two seams. Typically specified for tall columns, long spans, and heavily-loaded members. Grades 50 and 50W (weathering). 50 ksi Up to 1″ Square ≤ 50″×50″; rect ≤ 60″×40″; no rounds. Max perimeter 200″. Produced on Demand
Common Stock Lengths
for A500 HSS
20′ · 24′ · 40′ · 48′
These are the lengths most commonly produced. What a given service center actually carries varies by size, wall thickness and region, so confirm locally. Custom and extended lengths are available on direct mill orders or through specialty distributors.

How to read the tables

Produced Regularly

On the producer’s published rolling schedule, and can generally be filled within normal lead times. This describes production, not distribution — a regularly produced size is not necessarily carried by every service center, and stocking varies by region.

Produced on Demand

The producer has the equipment and tooling to manufacture this size but does not run it on a recurring cycle. Expect extended lead times, minimum order volumes, and potential tooling setup fees.

Availability data represents regular-schedule and on-demand production capability reported by STI member producers. Mill offerings change — confirm directly with the producer or distributor before specifying. This tool is a design aid for preliminary sizing; while the information is believed to be accurate, it should not be relied upon for any specific application without competent professional examination and verification by a licensed engineer.
